Well-Draining Soil
- Essentials: Cacti require soil that drains quickly to prevent water from sitting around their roots, which can cause rot. The soil should be loose and porous to allow excess water to escape easily.
- Key Ingredients:
- Sand: Coarse sand helps improve drainage.
- Perlite or Pumice: These lightweight volcanic rocks also improve soil aeration and drainage.
- Gravel or Small Stones: Adding these to the bottom of the pot or into the soil mix helps water flow through more freely.
Low Organic Matter
- Unlike most plants, cacti don’t need a lot of organic matter. Too much rich, organic material can hold moisture, leading to root rot.
- Soil Mix: A cactus soil mix typically contains only a small amount of organic material like peat moss or coconut coir to retain minimal moisture without causing waterlogging.
DIY Cactus Soil Mix
- If you’re making your own cactus soil, a common mix would be:
- 1 part vermicompost
- 2 parts coarse sand or cinder
- 1 part perlite or pumice for aeration and drainage
- Tip: Avoid using garden soil, as it can be too dense and hold too much water for cacti.
pH Level
- Cacti prefer slightly acidic soil with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5. Avoid very alkaline soils, as this can lead to nutrient deficiencies.
